  • A bit o' Iowa! :)

For my 4th of July break I went to Iowa with some of my friends. There's not much to say about it other than: corn, cows, and green. That's pretty much it. Yup, yup.

I did really enjoy experiencing a bit of farm life for the weekend, and I went a little photo-crazy. No lie, even after I deleted a bunch of the "crappy ones," I had almost 600 pictures on my memory card (from 3 days).

So, I thought I'd share a few of my favorites with you lovely Xangans, just so you can see what I was up to. After all, everyone needs to have a photoblog every once in a while, right? People like to look at stuff just as much as they like to read (if not more). And also, so you can be impressed by my amazing photography skillz!

Baxster... their old, fat beagle. It was love at first site.

    Iowa! 034P

Muddy creeks, bridges, and dust. All in vast quantities in Iowa.

    Iowa! 030P

    Breanna

    Iowa! 042

Ash... girl looks like a freaking super model!

    Iowa! 048P

    Silo... with ivy. Epic.

    Iowa! 052P

    Chainsaw. Yesss!

    Iowa! 076P

    Fields of wildflowers.

    Iowa! 119P

Ash again, with Baxster. I think she was attempting to brush him.

    Iowa! 121P

    Aly and Baxster!

    Iowa! 142P

Milking the cow. I didn't participate. Someone had to document.

    Iowa! 180P

We were playing peek-a-boo. This cutie was my buddy.

    Iowa! 211P

    Vandalizing the bridge. Shhhhhh.

    Iowa! 218P

For the record... I'm not left-handed. The picture just worked better that way.

    Iowa! 247P

So... we found this abandoned farm. It was the most amazing place to take pictures. One thing I didn't understand: piles of old stoves? WHAT?

    Iowa! 251P

    Broken down cars...

    Iowa! 255P

The obligatory Jenah and Breanna photo. This is actually one of the only ones in which we both look pretty good. lol

    Iowa! 266P

I don't even know about this one. We were just doing a lot of randomness.

    Iowa! 274P

    Aly!

    Iowa! 302P

This little guy was hiding, so it was hard to get a shot, but I tried. And actually, when we first saw it, it scared the CRAP out of us. Because we weren't expecting living things to be behind the door...

    Iowa! 321P

Just kind of an experimental thing.

    Iowa! 338P

Cows! I swear, they were coming right at us. Vicious beasts.

    Iowa! 343P

    Reflections are always fun.

    Iowa! 409P

    Sunset...

    Iowa! 467P

4th of July... you gotta have fireworks!

Alright... that's all I got. I narrowed down my 600 to a few pictures just for you guys! So, comment away. Criticize, appreciate, make fun of, whatever floats your boat. You guys rock!

  • Falling in love...

I wish falling in love didn't require vulnerability. That would make the prospect of falling in love so much less frightening to me. I hate being vulnerable.

I think the idea of falling in love is very frightening to me, because I've never done it before. One of my great flaws is that I'm a bit of a perfectionist; therefore, I don't like doing anything that I'm not sure I'm quite good at. I have no idea if I'm good at relationships, if I'll be a good girlfriend / eventually a good wife. Thus, it scares me so much! I don't want to fail.

In a previous blog, I asked about how one knows when they have crossed the line between liking someone and loving someone. SirNickDon asked me a question that really caused me to think. He asked, "Are you sure a line is the best metaphor here?"

Upon thinking about his question, I concluded that he was probably right; the line is not a good metaphor. But what is? I'd like to think that liking someone versus being in love with someone can be likened to standing on the edge of a cliff versus taking the jump off the cliff. The jumping off a cliff metaphor would cover both the idea of "falling" and also the vulnerability of falling in love. Yet, that seems to cliche.

What do you guys think? What is the proper metaphor for falling in love?

  • Wanna help me out with some homework?

You know you do!! Because you all love me so much!

I have to do two different kinds of surveys. The first one is for people who ARE NOT Christians. The second one is for people who ARE Christians. I could go out and ask random people on the street these questions, but since Xanga contains such a diverse group, I figured I'd ask you guys first! Besides that, I'm curious to hear your answers.

So, here's the deal... Pick the suvey appropriate to your belief / non-belief and you can either leave your answers in the comment, or message them to me, if you for any reason don't feel comfortable sharing your thoughts in "public." You guys are awesome!

Survey 1 [for people who are not Christians]

    1)      If you could summarize the purpose of the Christian religion in a sentence, how would you describe it?

    2)      Do you ever pray? Why? Why not?

    3)      What do you think God is like?

    4)      Have you experimented with the Christian faith? What was your experience?

    5)      If Christianity could extend anything of significance to you, what would you want it to offer?

    6)      What individual Christian have you known who impresses you? What characteristics about this person impressed you the most?

    7)      What individual Christian have you known who made you think the Christian faith is a joke? What characteristics about this person bothered you?

    8)      What are your main objections to Christianity?

    9)      What would you change about the Christian faith, or the church, to make it more acceptable to modern society?

    10)  Assuming the existence of God, if you could sit down with him over a fine dinner and ask him questions, what would they be?

Survey 2 [for people are Christians]

    1)      How would you describe a Christian? Why are you a Christian?

    2)      In what way(s) do you believe your upbringing has contributed to you being a Christian?

    3)      Do you believe there are different ways to God? Why? Why not?

    4)      Have you ever considered the truth of other religions? For example: Buddhism, Judaism, Islam, New Age, etc.

    5)      Why are there so many different churches (Baptist, Catholic, Congregational, Episcopal, Methodist, Presbyterian, etc.)?

    6)      Other than your faith in Christ, what else is important to you?

    7)      To what extent does your Christian faith affect your life? Examples?

    8)      Do you feel mostly forgiven or guilty about your life?

    9)      What is the most difficult thing you have ever faced?

    10)  Does God care about people who are not Christians? Why? How?

Did I mention that you guys are awesome?! Thanks for your time.

  • The Mosque

So, I went to a mosque today as a part of my World Religions class (hence the head-covering in my new profile picture). It was quite the interesting experience. I feel like I learned a lot and cleared up a lot of misconceptions.

First, I'd like to note that I'm glad I'm not a Muslim, simply for the reason of the clothes they have to wear! It wouldn't be so bad in the winter, but in the summer when it's 90 degrees out and super humid, wearing longsleeves, long skirts, and a head coving is NOT fun. Not to mention the fact that tradition requires Muslim women to wear 7 layers! HOLY CRAP! That would be terrible. I was just wearing enough to look modest for the mosque, I can't imagine wearing all that too!

Second, I think this visit cleared up a lot of misconceptions about Muslims and Islam. It seems to me that the West (especially America) has portrayed such a twisted view of Muslim people. And please, don't get me wrong, I am NOT prejudiced at all, I'm really not; I just feel like the media has presented me with an incorrect view of these people. Meeting the Imam and talking to him really cleared up a lot of things for me. I'm glad I had this opportunity.

I also realized the many similarities Islam has to Christianity. I never realized that so many of the beliefs we hold are the same or similar. Obviously, we are still majorly different religions. And a lot of the main points of our religions are different, but there are a lot of things we can agree on.

Over all, I really loved the experience. I only wish I could have visited during an actual service. I would have liked to see it.

About Me

  • So, basically, I'm a freshman at BCOM. I love the school; the one downside is missing everyone back home! I used to be in a band, but now I'm in college. Music is one of my greatest passions. I love to read all kinds of books. I blog because it is a good venue to release my thoughts and because I love the people I meet here. I think I'm a pretty chill person. I like to be hyper sometimes, but I also love to be serious, when the time is right. I happen to very opinionated. I love to learn new things and explore new ideas. I love to think and analyze. I'm not your typical girl; I think with my head, not my heart. I do love romance, but I'm waiting for God's direction in my life before I even consider dating. My relationship with God is what has carried me through this chaotic world. Life is full of it's ups and downs, but the one thing that I know will always remain the same is what I believe in.
